Signal from the Aurora

Dr. Yuna Park had spent her career studying atmospheric phenomena, but nothing prepared her for what the aurora revealed on the night of March 14th.

The northern lights over Station Kilo — the research outpost she'd called home for eleven months — pulsed in patterns that shouldn't have been possible. Not the usual curtains and ribbons of charged particles, but geometric sequences. Triangles. Spirals. Repeating.

Her spectrometer, a model so obsolete that her colleagues in Oslo had laughed when she'd shipped it north, was the only instrument sensitive enough to capture the anomaly. Newer equipment filtered out the very frequencies that carried the signal.

The data was cryptic at first. Binary noise layered beneath the visible spectrum. But when Yuna ran it through a Fourier transform, a pattern emerged — something that looked disturbingly like a coordinate system.

The message, once decoded, was oracular in its precision: a set of instructions for building a receiver, written in mathematics too elegant to be human. Yuna stared at the printout and felt her body immobilize — not from fear, but from the sudden, crushing weight of significance.

She was a scientist. She dealt in data, not prophecy. But the coordinates pointed to a location in the southern Pacific, and the instructions were clear.

Yuna picked up the satellite phone. Her hand was steady.

"This is Station Kilo. I need to speak with someone at the Space Agency. Yes, it's urgent. No, it can't wait until morning."

Outside, the aurora pulsed on.
