Maya pressed her back against the cold cave wall, torch flickering in the underground wind. The ancient map had led her here, deep beneath the Peruvian mountains, where no explorer had ventured in centuries.
"Pure insanity," she muttered to herself, watching shadows dance across walls covered in strange markings. Any rational person would have stayed home. But rationality had never been her strong suit.
A voice echoed from the darkness ahead. "Drop the torch and come forward."
She recognized him immediately — Dravec, the black-market dealer who had stolen her research. He stepped into the light, two armed guards flanking him.
"This is coercion," Maya said, her voice steady despite her racing heart. "You know that, right?"
"Call it what you like," Dravec replied with a cold smile. "Just walk."
They moved deeper into the cave until they reached a chamber that stole the breath from Maya's lungs. An enormous stone tablet dominated the far wall, covered in intricate reliefs.
"Ancient craftsmen would carve scenes like these to record their history," she said softly, stepping closer despite herself. The images showed a journey — a hidden valley, a golden artifact, a path beneath the stars. "This isn't just decoration. It's a map within a map."
Dravec pushed past her greedily, reaching toward the carved surface.
Maya smiled.
She had spent years studying these cultures. She knew exactly which stone to press.
The rumbling began immediately. Dravec shouted as the floor shifted and a hidden door swung open behind Maya — the real exit.
She ran toward the light, leaving greed and darkness behind.
